The Soul Kitchen Jukebox: Liam Frost

It's been a while since a quid was dropped into The Soul Kitchen's jukebox. A good three months in fact. Unforgiveable I know. However, the old girl has been dusted down and revitalized this week and with a special guest feeding the shrapnel into it to boot.

Mancunian singer/songwriter, real ale connosieur and professional wrestling enthusiast Liam Frost took time out from the recording of his third album to stop by the Kitchen and load a few of his favourite tunes onto the old Wurlitzer. Unfortunately, the Ultimate Warrior's theme is nowhere to be found.

1. The song that made you want to become a musician

Ryan Adams - Oh My Sweet Carolina
It's a funny question to answer, that one...I was 4 when I first decided I wanted to be a singer, and the only thing I think I was listening to was Michael Jackson's Bad album. But the first time I decided to write in the style of music that I write now, was when I first heard Ryan Adams' Heartbreaker record. I'd spent years in punk bands, and hearing that was a bit of an epiphany.

2. Song that makes you hit the dancefloor

The Zombies - She's Not There
I would have maybe picked something like Heard it Through The Grapevine, some really big soul song maybe...but I heard this song at a friend's club night for the first time in ages the other week and I thought it sounded brilliant. It got me on my feet, and so I'm picking She's Not There by The Zombies.

3. Song you're listening to most right now

My Morning Jacket - Off The Record (With honorable mention to It Beats 4 U)
My Morning Jacket are one of my favourite bands, and their new album Circuital came out recently. I'd been going back to their older albums in the weeks leading up to it, still enjoying their two middle albums It Still Moves and Z. I want to pick two songs from Z here, they're It Beats 4 U and Off The Record.

4. Your guilty pleasure song

Michael McDonald - I Keep Forgettin'
Me and a couple of friends have been obsessed with the short-lived internet series Yacht Rock for quite some time now. It's a fictionalised account of the lives and careers of some soft rock stars in the 70s and early 80s. One of the main focal points is Michael McDonald...I've become semi obsessed with his music ever since. I'm not even sure if this could be considered a guilty pleasure. His involvement in Regulate, and his recent collaboration with Grizzly Bear has left him seeming more relevant than ever! With Regulate in mind, I'll pick I Keep Forgettin'...SMOOTH...

5. The Song You Wish You'd Written

Bruce Springsteen - Atlantic City
There's too many of those...Wouldn't It Be Nice by The Beach Boys; Into My Arms by Nick Cave...I've been listening to the song Strawberry Wine by Ryan Adams a lot again of late, that's a bloody wonderful song. I think I'm going to have to pick some Springsteen though. Thunder Road seems a bit too obvious, as brilliant as it is...my favourite record is definitely Nebraska, and I'd have to say Atlantic City is my favourite song on that album. It probably ranks up there in my all time Boss top 3. Lovely.

In the meantime, visit here to listen to some of Liam's work, or alternatively, search him out on Spotify.

Until next time,

Keep on Keepin' on,

Baia
